Systems Engineer

The SE drives and supports partners and customers to develop virtualization solutions linking technology, data and applications to current and future business needs, using recognized IT architectural practices (e.g. Enterprise Architecture). He/she needs to be knowledgeable across all VMware domains, with deep proficiency in 1 and preferably multiple domains.  As well as developing the solutions, the SE needs to assist the partners and customers during initial delivery, assisting in developing go-to-market plans, training and enablement and support partner and direct sales efforts.


The SE must be able to understand each customer’s business and be able to map the technical requirements to appropriate VMware solutions; perform the technical “sell” of the solution and provide proof points of the technology. The SE will perform and support tasks such as technical sales calls, presentations, proof-of-concepts, capacity planning and technical ROI models. The SE needs to be an excellent communicator with both business and technical people, be able to work independently and understand the sales process. The SE will assist the customer to understand VMware technology, its impact on their business and the benefits that can be realized. In conjunction with this the VMware SE, will need to be able to work with Partners in the closing of opportunities, focusing on increase the partners capabilities and success

Major Responsibilities:

  • Create and develop technical solutions and architectures, and the underlying business cases and planning that meets critical business needs in domains of ITaaS such as IaaS, Cloud Services, Virtualization, Unix to VMware migrations etc
  • Lead presales engagement with initial design / architecture and delivery of strategic projects while enabling and mentoring VMware SE and/or Partner and Customer Teams
  • Develop VMware technical solutions – unsolicited proposals, presentations etc
  • Set up demonstrations of VMware products and deliver these to customers and also potentially peer SE’s, Sales and Channel partners
  • Perform planning and pre-sales tasks, for example capacity planning assessment to assist sales in development of ROI studies
  • Execute VMware engagements in a timely and effective manner and assist with planning
  • Effectively communicate solutions architecture to the partner, customer, third parties and project teams
  • Ensure that propositions are technically sound, deliverable, competitive and representative of market leadership in the application of technology to addressing business issues
  • Define, develop and implement actions according to account plans on accounts with account teams
  • Drive business development to support presales activities, with a primary focus on identifying, scoping and proposing services engagements
  • Coordinate sales efforts with various functions internally and externally such as sales, inside sales, PSO, TAM, Specialist, Partners, Technology Alliances etc
  • Participate in regional partner and customer marketing events to promote VMware, VMware partners and solutions
  • Develop new business opportunities
  • Participate and drive account relationship and issue management activities
  • Maintain current and in-depth knowledge of the entire VMware product line (e.g. VCAP or VCDX certification), and also maintain proficiency in VMware service offerings, value propositions, and representative case studies

Requirements

  • 3+ years as a technical solutions or enterprise architect in a presales consulting environment, with strong experience in developing Enterprise IT architectural solutions; TOGAF or similar certification preferred
  • Business development experience in a presales consulting and/or professional services environment including time supporting sales and managing technical engagement
  • Significant (e.g. 2 years plus) experience in infrastructure architecture and design of complex distributed systems environments, including failover techniques, recovery/rollback, and application partitioning etc
  • Significant (e.g. 2 years plus) experience architecting the solutions for Unix to VMware migrations or architecting solutions with experience in hypervisors, cloud computing and network virtualization etc
  • Significant (e.g. 2 years plus) experience in cloud management solutions that provides capabilities to abstract, automate, monitor, manage, optimize and meter the infrastructure components towards private, virtual private, public and/or hybrid cloud environment
  • Strong grasp of administration concepts, activities, tuning, and implementation best practices for business 
  • Experience in a technical lead role for small- or medium-size teams (preferred) 
  • Strong presentation, executive client management and business development skills 
  • Superior organizational and negotiation skills 
  • Strong practical Unix, Linux or Windows systems administration skills at some career stage (preferred) 
  • Strong understanding of computer server architectures, including peripheral interfaces (SCSI, RAID, Ethernet) and multi-processor designs (SMP)
  • Strong understanding of server, storage, networking architectures / configurations necessary to facilitate virtualizing business critical applications
  • Strong understanding of dependent services / technologies critical to support business critical applications in both a physical and virtual environment
  • Experience in assessing current state processes and define future state processes necessary to support mission critical applications in a virtual environment
  • Familiarity with systems management concepts, processes and standards (e.g. SNMP); capacity/performance management and tuning; and storage and network management
  • Understanding of modern IT production datacenter and Internet (ISP/ASP) hosting operations
  • Application software development and/or Systems programming or OS internal level skills would be an advantage 
  • Familiarity with operations and systems management concepts, processes and standards (e.g. solid understanding of ITIL, CMMI, or COBIT fundamentals
  • Excellent communications (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills 
  • Strong English language skills, spoken and written, further Asian languages preferable 
  • Ability to travel, including international 
  • Strong ability to effectively manage time, activities, and responsibilities
  • Existing technical training and certification in VCP preferred 
  • B.S./B.A./M.S. degree or equivalent technical training (VCAP or VCDX certification) preferred
